During World War II, good jobs brought good salaries, which meant a disposable income. This was a first for many of the “newcomers” who had migrated to the North. Men opted for fancy cars, but women saw it as a time to shop and glamorize themselves. I. Magnin, a store on Broadway in downtown Oakland, became the popular hangout. Sunday mornings at church became a fashion show, and the competition was fierce. Of course, the pastor’s wife was always decked out from head to toe. The women in the choir could not wait for church to let out so that they could take off their robes and join the congregation in their parade of fabulous outfits. Slim’s on Seventh Street became the official fashion show headquarters. Some women took modeling classes from Annette Bruce, then the most popular fashion teacher. Others felt they had their own swag and did not need a teacher. Whether a model or a glamorous observer, everyone enjoyed the shows.
